GEORGE NEWS - Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Anroux Marais on Friday 24 November officially opened six brand-new netball courts at the Rosemoor Stadium.
The courts are an investment of R1,2 million, jointly funded by the provincial sport department and George Municipality and resulted from the Netball World Cup hosted in Cape Town earlier this year.
Dr Lyndon Bouah, chief director of Sport and Recreation in the Western Cape, said the World Cup organisers wanted to leave a legacy once the event was over by building at least 30 netball courts in the Western Cape.
They have exceeded that target and eventually managed to build 56, co-funding the courts with the various local municipalities.
MEC Marais said the Rosemoor courts are of a very high standard. Facilities such as this bring hope and create opportunities for young girls.
"The community must now take ownership of the facility and ensure that future generations can share in this legacy."
The vice-chairman of Eden Sport Club, Ebrahim America, said once the courts are officially open, they want to make sure that the children from Rosemoor and surrounding areas start playing.
According to Granville Campher from the municipality who was an avid champion for the establishment of these courts, said they have already received a large number of enquiries from schools who are interested to use the new facility.
