Adopting and believing in a chosen style is so important to become a good putter as 45% of our time is spent on the putting green in a round of golf.
Having said this the one position all good putters have in common is a square putter face at impact.
Getting the putter face aligned correctly at address despite the style you have chosen is the first step to good putting and the following tips will help you with your alignment:

Buy a putter with a decent line that is square to the clubface.
Check that the grip is square to the clubface – most putter grips have a flat side to them and it should be parallel to the line on the putter head.

A practice aid would be a simple chalk line – use it to make a line on the green towards your intended target and practice your alignment.
Improve your alignment and you could well knock a few shots of your score and achieve the handicap you have targeted.
