Initially the weather forecast predicted some rain, but it turned out to be a wonderfully clear day while the players were out there thrashing, hacking, hooking, fluffing and striking some sweet shots on one of the most beautiful golf courses in the country.
Despite it being over a long weekend, the fourball sponsored tournament consisted of a nice full field and super prizes were also sponsored for presentation during the closing ceremony. An auction was led by Peter Gibbs and, as usual, there was no shortage of ragging while bidders were cajoled into putting down their money for a good cause.
It all began when Annette Wesson, a volunteer at the botanical garden who helps pro-pagate, weed and assist in whatever needs to be done, approached volunteer Maré Collett, who is in charge of the nursery. Annette and her husband Harry offered to stage the fundraiser and the proceeds would be used to upgrade the indigenous plant nursery, which is a vital income generator for the garden.
In a flash things started up in military precision since Harry and Annette have in the past organised eight golf days for the benefit of the George Arts Theatre, which also depends heavily on public donations and membership fees to survive. The Garden Route Botanical Garden Trustees extend their heartfelt gratitude to Harry and Annette for their wonderful gesture, massive effort and staging a magnificently well-run event.
Chairman of the Board of Trustees Robin Clark wanted to know when we could have a repeat and Harry was quick to answer that the next one will be even better because there will be more time for planning and organising and was sure we could make it a full day's tournament in future.
Much appreciation was expressed to the George Herald for compiling (and sponsoring) a centre spread to advertise the event and especially to all the businesses who so generously contributed to a truly enjoyable day.
