FOOTBALL NEWS - Benni McCarthy sees this year’s African Confederation Cup as a real opportunity for his Cape Town City side to achieve, even if they are playing in continental club competition for the first time.
“It’s a great opportunity for our club but not just for our club but also because are representing South African football on the continent in this competition,” said the City coach after his side secured passage into the second round by beating the Swazi army club Young Buffaoes 1-0 in the second leg at home at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town on Tuesday for a 2-0 aggregate triumph.
“I would like to take it as seriously as I take the league and Nedbank, the MTN8 and the Telkom. It’s a cup completion, there is a trophy to be won and, at the end of the day, it goes on your CV that you’ve won it.
“A lot of football teams in this country complain about this competition because financially it does burn a hole in your pocket when you go onto the group stages but at the end of the day, there is good prize money. If you can go all the way and win it, you can make all your money back. It’s no Mickey Mouse competition.”
