GEORGE NEWS - The St George's cricket team, that hails from Borcherds, wants to attract and develop up-and-coming young players.
This is the team's first year in the South Western District Cricket Promotional League.
To achieve their vision, they need support in acquiring cricket equipment such as proper batting nets, cricket balls, helmets, bats, cricket pads, clothing and transport.
According to their team manager, Granville Carolus, they have players from communities like Borcherds, Parkdene and Conville.
He is hopeful that with help from outside, cricketers from these communities will develop into better players and also stay out of the streets, away from crime.
"We want the sportsmen and women in our communities to be developed. We want them to be disciplined and become examples and show people that there is still hope for young sportsmen and young sportswomen.
"Mainly though, we want our community to grow and be safe for every youth and every community member." Carolus is grateful for the help the team has received so far.
"We want to thank Ryan Tarentaal from DMT Logistics for sponsoring us water for the season and Heatherlands High School for availing us of their cricket field and premises to use for our home games.
"We also want to thank Heidedal Primary School for allowing us to use their sports premises to practice during the week."
The St George's management team consists of the CEO Patrick Rhode, secretary Lambert Maart, treasurer Jacques Stoffels, team manager Granville Carolus and coaches Brain Gelderbom and Franklin Loff.
