GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Nelson Mandela University (George Madibaz Cricket Club) has been suspended from SWD Cricket leagues for the remainder of the 2019/20 season.

The suspension comes after George Madibaz failed to field a team for three fixtures in the SWD Reserve League. 

The club was due to play matches against George Cricket Club C, Pirates United B, and Knysna Cavaliers B on 12, 13, and 20 October respectively, but failed to produce a team on each occasion.

The third failure to field a team came against Cavaliers, has seen the club breach clause 15 (b) of the administrative rulings of SWD Cricket, which states “If a club forfeits three matches (irrespective of the league) during the season, such club will immediately be suspended from the SWDC competitions for the duration of the season”, making this an administrative suspension for Madibaz. 

This suspension does not only apply to the 2nd XI in the Reserve League, but to the club as a whole, which means that the 1st XI is now out of the running for the SWDC T20 competition, as well as the SWD Premier League.

This will see George Cricket Club automatically progress to the final of the SWDC T20 competition as they would have faced Madibaz in the semifinal. 

According to SWD Cricket CEO Albertus Kennedy, there are procedures that need to be followed before a meeting with the Members'  Council, and therefore a date has not yet been set. This meeting will give the member clubs an opportunity to debate the matter.

However, the club is still suspended for the time being, and will be docked points for all fixtures that would have been played.
