PROPERTY NEWS - Preparing for your little one's arrival? Plenty of people will tell you what to buy and what not to waste your money on when it comes to preparing for baby.
It can all get a bit confusing, but there are a few staples in the nursery design world right now that really do make the difference between a boring old room and a calming sanctuary for both baby and parents.
Furniture
This one is obvious, but can't be overlooked. The cot and compactum have to be strong, sturdy and well made. It's okay to buy secondhand, but do make sure that the cot doesn't have drop down sides - these have been shown to be more of a hazard than they're worth and most modern cots don't have them anymore. It also helps to invest in furniture that grows with your baby, so look out for convertible items.
Storage
You will never have enough. No matter how minimalist your intentions, you will be constantly looking for places to stash extra items away. Try to find some extra, pretty storage boxes that double up as décor to hide away any products you don't want on display and if you have hanging cupboard space, install extra rails for more clothes. Floating shelves for books, photo frames and treasures save up on floor space.
Décor
Once you've decided on the route you're taking with your décor, try to keep things to a minimum, even if you have the space for more.
Not only does baby get overstimulated, but you'll want your space to be as calming and nurturing as possible for all those long, late nights. Opt for one uniform colour palette, soft things like gentle drapes, a hanging tent canopy and dimly lit fairy lights for a peaceful space.
