The group wants to raise R10 million, which will cover some of the debt owed by students who have been financially excluded from the institution.
While R3 million has been raised so far, the SRC has urged members of the public to help reach its goal before the end of this month.
Spokesperson Fasiah Hassan says, “We have a very just cause. We’re working hard. We want to be proactive. We don’t want to sit back and wait for whatever might happen. Thousands of students will go home on our watch and we cannot allow it.”
Yesterday, Interim Coalition Graduates for the Cause teamed up with local rapper iFani in a challenge to raise R10 million for students who are at risk of financial exclusion at Wits.
The campaign will see the rapper present his industry colleagues and cooperates in Johannesburg with a blank cheque under the slogan #WillYouRespond.
Spokesperson Refilwe Matenche says, “We’re hoping with this one initiative we can set the pace for the rest of the year and hopefully collect the rest of the money.”
iFani, who started the hashtag on Monday morning, says the idea was spurred on by the #FeesMustFall protests.
Cassper Nyovest was the first to respond to the challenge and has doubled up on iFani’s contribution of R50,000.
Last month, Nedbank put forward R2 million to provide tertiary funding for students who are referred to as the ‘missing middle’.
