NATIONAL NEWS - The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) says the work on Section 3 of the N2 between Caledon and Riviersonderend that started in October spans a distance of 38km.
This section is a single carriage road with surfaced shoulders.
The project entails improvements to the existing road prism, to improve safety conditions as well as patching and resealing of the existing road.
The scope of the work covers the following:
•Additional climbing lanes will be provided.
•The shoulder of the road will be widened in certain areas, while the width of the lanes will be increased in places.
•Eight intersections along this route will be upgraded and certain rest areas surfaced.
•Cross drainage and side drainage will be addressed to improve drainage on and off the road.
•A surface treatment will be constructed over the entire distance and at all the major intersections.
•Structural work will be carried out for the widening of two bridges, i.e. Droogas River Bridge and Maandagsout River Bridge.
During construction, traffic is being accommodated to allow for two-way traffic with possible periodic daytime lane closures, where a single lane stop/go system will be in place.
Road users are requested to be vigilant and patient at all times, maintain the relevant speed limit and following distance and follow the directional signage throughout the project area.
“This project is envisaged to be completed in 2020, and will have significant economic benefit for the region and its people, in the form of employment opportunities and economic participation of SMMEs.
"The end product will also greatly improve all road users' experience,” said Kobus van der Walt, Sanral Western Region Manager.
