NATIONAL NEWS - Mayor Patricia de Lille says a proposed drought charge for residents is necessary to avoid a waterless day zero.
Addressing council on Tuesday, De Lille warns too many residents are simply not saving enough water.
She says officials are working to secure new water sources, but many residents are resisting the installation of water restriction devices.
The city hopes to raise almost half a billion rand in the first year of implementing a drought charge.
The appeal to residents to save water means less money in its coffers.
De Lille says without this income, the city can't fund its water augmentation schemes.
“This is a necessary consideration to help us to avoid the dreadful day zero scenario. I’m proposing to council today that the city introduces a temporary drought charge as from the 1st of February 2018.”
