NATIONAL NEWS - A man walking along the N2 from Winklespruit to Arbour Crossing in Amanzimtoti, KZN, to run an errand on Sunday, became an instant hero after he called the police about a woman he saw lying in the grass a few metres from the road.

Eugene Sibiya of Umgababa says when he saw the young woman just before the Umdoni Road bridge, he initially did not know whether she was dead or alive.

“Many cars were passing, but they couldn’t see her because of the tall grass. I was scared to come closer to check whether she was dead or alive because I thought I could be disturbing a crime scene, so I carried on my way,” he adds.

When he reached the mall, he approached security guards who all told him there was nothing they could do as it was outside the mall.

“I also hoped I would bump into a police officer and let them know about what I had seen. I continued and bought the blade and went home,” he says.

When he got home, he decided to make a Facebook post in his local group to ask what he should do. Umgababa does not have a police station, which he says would have made things easier for him.

“On Facebook, someone suggested I call 10 111, which is a toll-free police line. I did that, and I was able to get in touch with Amanzimtoti Police, and I gave them the location,” he says.

After a while, the police called to tell him that they found the woman and she was alive. They also took a statement from him.

“They told me she was very disoriented and did not know how she got to that area. Drag marks were visible on the grass, and there is no telling how long she had been there or who dumped her,” he says.

Sibiya received hundreds of messages on Facebook commending him for his deed, with most people saying the young woman would have died had he not found her. The police were able to get the woman’s name and surname and information that she is from Umzinto.
