According to a report by US publication Car and Driver, order books for the Scirocco have closed despite there being a number of models left in stock, all but confirming speculation earlier this year that a petrol engine successor will not be introduced underpinned by the Volkswagen Group's flexible MQB platform.
In interview with Britain's Auto Express some two months ago though, Volkswagen R&D Head Frank Welsch stated that the Scirocco could be re-invented as an all-electric model based on the automaker's MEB platform, and producing between 125 kW and 221 kW with a range of between 320-603 km.
"For me, we can only use [Scirocco] for a sporty two-door coupe. We are not clear on how we will do such a car, and are thinking whether we do an interesting concept based on our electric platform; this could be a great and fun car," Welsch said.
"You don’t buy a Scirocco if you have a family. If you tell someone, ‘This is a Scirocco’, they have a clear idea of what this should be and of what it should look like. We are working on a concept for emotional cars. Volkswagen always has an offer for emotional cars".
The possible switch in platform as part of Volkswagen's ID range of dedicated electric vehicles could also see the top spec R employing a all-wheel drive setup unlike the outgoing front-wheel drive model, while non-sporting models could potentially be rear wheel drive.
