Adding to the problems of air bag supplier, Takata Corporation, Honda and Daihatsu said they would recall an additional five million vehicles that could potentially be affected by the air bag concerns.
Eyewitness News reported that the recall, announced by the carmakers was not encouraged by any injuries or accidents and is merely a precautionary measure on behalf of the manufacturers.
Following the recalls from Honda and Daihatsu, the total number of recalls involving Takata Corporation has risen to roughly 36 million vehicles since 2008.
Concerns were raised over the excessive amount of force at which the air bags deployed, resulting in spraying shrapnel on the inside of the cabin.
According to Toyota there are, locally, 195 630 Corolla, Yaris and Run-X models manufactured between 2002 and 2007, which are affected by the recall. Additionally 28 376 Hilux, Fortuner and RAV4 models, manufactured between 2003 and 2005 are also affected.
Nissan confirmed that the previous generation Almera, manufactured in Rosslyn between 2004 and 2007 is possibly affected by the air bag issue.
Investigations indicated that certain types of Takata air bags had a tendency to let moisture in, causing damage to the inflators.
