Fast forward to 2018, and it seems as if the new go-to word is ‘sport’. A sports model can feature absolutely no performance enhancements but if it looks fast, then it must be sporty right? Well, Honda has slapped a Sport badge onto its Jazz and I decided to see just how sporty it is.
It does look sporty
The Jazz has over the years been a hit in the motoring world for many years, however, it did lack a bit of zest when stacked-up next to the likes of the Civic Type R. In fact, Honda has been adding a bit of enthusiasm into most of its models lately. I’m glad it decided to pay attention to the Jazz, as this Sport model is just what the small hatchback needed.
Setting itself apart from other models in the range, the Sport gets 16-inch black alloy wheels, a more aggressive front bumper with LED daytime running lights, sportier rear bumper and an extended boot lid spoiler, which adds to its sporty looks, but as I mentioned, it’s easier to make a car look sportier than making it feel more energetic.
All the show minus the go
Thankfully, the Jazz Sport features an all-new engine. It’s a 1.5-litre petrol that I’d love to say features a turbocharger, but unfortunately it doesn’t. Nevertheless, the motor develops 97kW/155Nm which is sent to the front wheels through a revised CVT gearbox, that features paddle shifters behind the steering wheel.
It definitely offers up some old-school fun in that you need to work the rev-happy motor to get it going. Honda has also given the suspension a bit of a refresh with updated dampers and revised brakes.
As spacious as ever
Inside, the Jazz Sport boasts a spacious interior with a quality feel. Other niceties include a push-button start, keyless entry, a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Bluetooth and USB, a reverse camera and a six-speaker sound system.
The drive
Out on the road, the car won’t blow your mind with its hyper-drive like acceleration, in fact, Honda claims a 10 second 0-100km/h time. Once the car gets going, it has no issue maintaining its speed and although I don’t like CVT gearboxes, this one has been designed to feel like a conventional auto. The real highlight though is in how the Jazz Sport handles. It is so much fun to throw around some corners and that is where the car really makes sense.
Verdict
The Honda Jazz Sport looks the part and when it comes to offering a blend of pure, uncomplicated motoring fun it delivers. It’s ideal for hitting those suburban back roads, but to be honest, there are other, cheaper options out there. It also offers those iconic Magic Seats, is reliable and overall, a quality product but with a rather high, premium R312 900 sticker price.
