Unveiled in November at the Sao Paulo Motor Show in Brazil, the GR Sport, in South African guise, uses the top-spec 2.8 GD-6 Raider 4x4 auto as a base and mainly aids cosmetics enhancements such as GR bespoke diamond cut 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in all-terrain rubber, a black grille with prominent TOYOTA badging, GR specific graphics, a black roof and bonnet, matte black mirror caps, side steps and sports bar, black wheel arch extensions and GR badges on the tailgate and doors.
While no details of the interior were revealed, expect the local model to align with its Brazilian cousin and come with a perforated leather steering wheel, black leather seats with GR embossed headrests, GR floor mats, a GR branded starter button, red stitching and a commemorative GR number plaque at the base of the gear lever with a special white backlighting for the instrument cluster rounding the changes off.
Up front, the GR Sport will once again be powered by the 2.8 GD-6 turbodiesel engine that produces 130kW/450Nm, hooked to a six-speed automatic gearbox that comes with selectable four-wheel drive and a low range gearbox. Unlike the regular Hilux on which it is based though, the GR Sport comes with an off-road focused suspension.
No local launch date as yet been revealed.
