Update
GEORGE NEWS - Who will drive around with the CAG 1 number plate? The number of Georgians applying for vehicle registration is increasing so rapidly that the CAW combinations have run out and an additional registration code is necessary.
There is space for only nine symbols on a number plate in the specified letter size. CAW takes up three spaces, which leaves six for a blank space and up to five digits.
According to a statement issued by the Department of Transport and Public Works last week, the new CAG registration code will most likely be introduced in the next six weeks. A notice about the new code was published in the Provincial Gazette on 26 February last year.
New registration code for WP
According to the statement, a new provincial licence mark for the Western Cape is also being considered. A notice will be published soon in the Provincial Gazette to invite public input regarding this.
"The department is considering the option to provide for a transition period of five years, during which the public will have to convert to the new system. Personalised WP licence numbers will not be affected by this new system," said Jandré Bakker, head of communication.
He said this is a pre-emptive move to make provision for the CAA and CAW numbers that are running out fast.
Cape Town numbers
The CAA licence mark for Cape Town will run out by January next year. "As at 3 November, 76 212 CAA numbers have been allocated since its introduction on 13 April this year," said Bakker.
