GEORGE NEWS - World Religion Day was celebrated in George on Sunday 18 January with representatives from five of the city’s religions sharing insights on the theme of ‘The youth building a better society’.
Presentations were done by some youths - Sahina Samsodien (18) of the Rahma Mosque and Ihsaan Hendricks, the youth co-ordinator, as well as by Nura Orooji (22) of the Bahá’í community. They all spoke about the importance of preparing the youth for lives directed towards the betterment of society through acts of service and their professions.
Presentations were also given by Fr Edward Alkaster of the Catholic Church and by representatives of the Hindu and Jewish communities.
Music was provided by the George Monday Singing Group. The Bahá’ís of George hosted the event, which took place in St Augustine Hall.
World Religion Day has been observed in George for over 30 years and throughout the world since its inception in 1950 by the Baha’is of the United States. Its purpose is to highlight the harmony underlying the spiritual principles of the world’s religions and the role they can play in unifying humanity.
