GEORGE NEWS - Winter is here - a time of year when things tend to be dreary and dull. But there is currently an art exhibition at the George Museum titled Winter Wonderland that is guaranteed to put lots of cheer into a depressing day.
Entering the exhibit you are embraced by something unexpected - colour. Rather than rows of grey paintings, you see colourful flowers, landscapes and bright abstract objects. Each artist is telling a story with their paintbrush.
Gert Bezuidenhout has an interesting, hobby-like take with his piece Visvanger. His medium is sand, from which he constructed an image of a kingfisher bird. This art piece has texture, with colours hinting at warm autumn and cool winter tones.
Liezl du Toit's Let sleeping dogs lie gives the impression of the pop art era and the likes of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichenstein. This playful piece reminds you of a beloved pet basking in sunlight on a winter morning.
Marika Smit's watercolour painting of a tree pays homage to winter mornings in George. This modern abstract piece has wintery hues of blue with warm sunlight yellow.

Johann Koch's realistic landscape paintings of the Karoo in autumn and winter create the feeling with the onlooker of being there in the moment. The barren Karoo landscapes can be described as contrasting, with rain depicted in one art piece.
Each piece has a surprise for the viewer, which is unexpected in realistic paintings. Various artists contributed to this exhibition which is open at the George Museum until 15 June.
Why wait? Go immerse yourself in some cheer and warmth.
