GEORGE NEWS - Learners of four local schools and members of the neighbourhood watch teams of three communities in George can now feel the wind in their hair when they cycle to school or patrol the area on brand-new bicycles donated by Western Cape Premier Alan Winde.
Ministers and other dignitaries gathered at Conville Primary earlier today for the official handover of the bicycles.
The Premier’s Cycle Tour kicked off in the Garden Route earlier last week, with pit stops in Plettenberg Bay, Knysna, George, Mossel Bay and Oudtshoorn.

Sporting their branded cycling outfits, ministers addressed representatives of the different schools and communities, including Conville Primary, Tabata Primary, Parkdene Secondary and Mzoxolo Primary, as well as Conville, Hoogekraal and Mdongwe neighbourhood watch teams, before they jumped on their cycles for a ride through George.
Winde said these bicycles will support learners with safe, reliable transport to school and empower neighbourhood watches in their crime prevention efforts, while also encouraging the use of non-motorised transport for healthier, safer lifestyle choices.

“I only have two messages,” said Winde. “When you get on a bicycle, you must be safe on the roads. Look after these bicycles and be safe. Also, we don’t want crime in our societies, we want to grow and prosper.”
The ministerial group had the chance to enjoy a bus ride on a Go George bus yesterday, during their short visit to the town.
