Update
GEORGE NEWS - The former director of Civil Engineering Services, Reggie Wesso, has left the employ of the George Municipality by mutual agreement.
"Accordingly, the post has been advertised," said municipal spokesperson Chantèl Edwards-Klose earlier this week. Wesso didn't respond to a request for comment.
The former director was suspended for three months at a special council meeting on 11 March. Following the preliminary investigation and findings of the Disciplinary Board meeting held on 5 March, Council agreed that a full investigation must be conducted by an independent investigator.
In addition to this investigation, disciplinary steps against Wesso were on the cards.
However, three months down the line, the municipality confirmed that it has reached a "mutual agreement" with Wesso and that the post has been advertised. A question on the extent of Wesso's severance package was not answered.
According to reliable sources, the matter relates to the independent forensic investigation into the Nelson Mandela Boulevard construction.
The contract with Muravah Building & Civils, the contractor that landed the project to upgrade the boulevard in Thembalethu, was terminated two years ago under the mayorship of Melvin Naik. Wesso was the director of Civil Engineering at the time.
The position of director of Electrotechnical Engineering has been filled and the director will start on 1 July. Edwards-Klose said a press release and photograph will be released once the new director is in office.
