GEORGE NEWS - The private sector is stepping up to ensure that tourists to Wilderness have a very pleasant stay this year. Informal, self-appointed "car guards" are often more of a hindrance than a help.
Massimo Mariotti, owner of Salina's Restaurant, has come up with a workable solution to this situation. He has provided 10 unemployed men with an opportunity to earn an income over the festive season.
Marriotti has provided uniforms and bibs for the 10 men who work on the parking area at the NSRI / Main Beach. They are easily identified by their blue uniforms and orange bibs.
They will keep the area clean, direct traffic, assist tourists and act as parking attendants. They are not paid a salary and will only be working for tips.
To supplement their income, they have been given permission to wash cars. Marriotti will be providing the buckets, cloths and soap. Parking is free, but visitors are encouraged to tip the attendants. Before they start duty, they will report in and a sobriety test will be done.
Wilderness Ward Councillor Marlene Barnardt has welcomed this initiative. She stated that this is a good example of how the business community can get involved to find solutions to problems in our various wards.
Barnardt encouraged other businesses to embark on similar initiatives. "This project is empowering 10 men by giving them a job, an income and dignity," she said.
