GEORGE NEWS - On Tuesday 11 June in U3A's Armchair Travel, Cyril and Valerie Wynstanley will share with their memories and a video of their trip to view the Namaqualand flowers.
On Wednesday 13 June, Case Rijsdijk will deliver a lecture on Omar Khayyam.
Omar Khayyam was a philosopher, astronomer and mathematician of note, but he is best known for his collection of quatrains known as the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, particularly the translation by Edward Fitzgerald.
This was widely published in an enormous variety of forms and sizes, small pocket editions were popular'love gifts' in the Victorian era and after.
There is also a large number of different translations and an enormous number of quatrains, the number depending on those chosen by the translator. In this talk Case will discuss the Rubaiyat but will really concentrate on presenting Khayyam as the brilliant mathematician, philosopher and astronomer that he was.
Both lectures start at 10:30 at Emmaüs in Memoriam Street. Entrance is R5 for members and R10 for visitors.
Come along to two totally different lectures that are both well worth attending. Any queries to Sue on 083 996 3122.
