GEORGE NEWS - The Garden Route SPCA held a function at their premises on Thursday 24 August to celebrate the completion of their mass sterilisation project in Thembalethu.
More than 1 500 dogs and cats were sterilised in six months.
The Garden Route SPCA took hands with the Garden Route Animal Hospital, George Animal Hospital, VetCare Animal Clinic, Heatherlands Animal Hospital and York Street Vet in the mass sterilisation project.
The initiative was started by the Western Cape Department of Agriculture.
The Garden Route SPCA applied for money two years ago and were granted R650 000 for this project, which started in January and ended in July.
The SPCA is happy to have sterilised more pets than they had aimed for.
Heather Church, Garden Route SPCA chairperson, thanked the companies that donated towards the function, as well as Kosie de Wet from Henties for the fruit juices and Carien van Rensburg from van Rensburg Foods for delicious platters of finger food.
Church said they want to continue with the sterilisations. "There are still a lot more dogs and cats to do, we just do not have enough money now to continue. The by-laws require that all of the dogs must be sterilised. If a person does not want to sterilise their animal, they have to take out a permit at a cost of R1 000 per animal, per year.
"A lot of people in the township areas cannot afford to sterilise their animals - this is where we come in and try to help them do it at a very low charge or at no cost at all."
