GEORGE NEWS - A long-cherished dream of visiting the beach was fulfilled for members of the Garden Route Stroke Support Group on Wednesday 13 March.
Thanks to the commendable assistance from the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), this aspiration became a reality.
For many, a beach visit is a simple pleasure, but for those grappling with balance challenges, physical limitations, or wheelchair dependency, it represents a daunting obstacle.
Since its inception in early 2022, the Garden Route Stroke Support Group has been eager to organise a beach outing for its members.
Their dream materialised on Wednesday when 26 members, alongside six therapists and NSRI volunteers, enjoyed a picnic and swim at Victoria Bay.
Victoria Bay was selected for its wheelchair-friendly amenities, including an accessible bathroom and a ramp leading to the beach.
Despite these facilities, reaching the water remained a challenge.
Therapists and NSRI volunteers resorted to carrying some members in plastic chairs to the water's edge, as the ramp's incline is inadequate and additional support is required to navigate it safely.
There were moments of joy and tears as survivors experienced the ocean's embrace after years of longing. Some of the more adventurous ones relished a swim, buoyed by inflatable tubes.
Special mention is made of Grant Jerome of NSRI Wilderness (Station 23), whose diligent efforts guaranteed everyone's safety in the water.
The group extends its heartfelt gratitude to the NSRI for their indispensable support in turning dreams into reality. Thanks also goes to the surfers and bystanders who lent a helping hand.
Stroke Support Group a sanctuary
The Garden Route Stroke Support Group offers a sanctuary for stroke survivors and their caregivers, fostering a familial bond and providing essential support. Meetings are held bi-monthly in George, facilitated by a team of therapists spanning various disciplines.
These gatherings not only offer support but also therapeutic activities tailored for stroke survivors.
Additionally, the group organises outings to enrich members' lives, emphasising inclusivity and combatting the isolation often caused by post-stroke physical limitations.
These services are provided free of charge, thanks to the volunteer therapists committed to the cause.
Plea to businesses offering experiences
The group is eager to explore new opportunities in the Garden Route for its members.
Local businesses interested in supporting or offering experiences for these resilient individuals are encouraged to reach out. Your involvement could significantly enhance quality of life for those affected by stroke.
Donations to support the Garden Route Stroke Support Group are welcome.

Prioritising accessibility
They also urge local businesses to prioritise accessibility for individuals with mobility challenges.
George, renowned for hosting the annual OCC wheelchair race and home to a significant elderly population, presents a prime opportunity for businesses to lead by example and be a beacon of accessibility and inclusivity in our community.
NSRI members support a stroke survivor in the water while other survivors and helpers stand by.
