GEORGE NEWS - After nearly being beaten to death for stealing food because she was hungry, Sadie, a dog from Parkdene, is doing extremely well at the Garden Route SPCA (GRSPCA).
According to GRSPCA head inspector, Salomé Bruyns, Sadie is ready to be adopted.
"She has come out of her shell and is really doing very well. We thank every single person who donated towards Sadie's recovery. Without your generous contributions we would not be able to do what we do," said Bruyns.
Bruyns and her team were shocked to the core when they received video footage of Sadie being tied up and beaten by her owner last month.
"She was screaming her lungs out as her owner just kept on beating her with a pickaxe handle. And this for stealing food because she was hungry. I have to admit I couldn't watch the whole video and that's a first for me," said Bruyns at the time.
Trainee inspector Vanessa Lucas received the call and video on Sunday 13 June and went out immediately. When she arrived at the house the suspect allegedly stood in his yard, ready and waiting for her with a pair of scissors.
The man initially ran away with Sadie, but she was rescued by the GRSPCA the following day.
"Lucas went to lay charges and the police found the suspect with Sadie at home and contacted us. We immediately removed her. Sadie's soul was clearly broken but we promised her that nobody will ever hurt her again. Charges have been laid under the Animals Protection Act and the case is now in the hands of the police who are busy investigating it," said Bruyns.
Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact the investigating officer, Sgt Geldenhuys, on 044 803 3318.
Third tortured Lawaaikamp dog adopted
The last remaining female of the three dogs that were confiscated by the GRSPCA after being tortured by children in Lawaaikamp earlier this year, has been adopted. Olivia, as she is now known, was one of three dogs who were swung by their leashes by a group of 14- and 15-year-olds in March this year. In a video that circulated on social media, a boy could be seen swinging a dog on a leash in the air while his friends watched and cheered him on.
Olivia and her two friends, Gabriella and Khalisi, have now all been successfully rehomed. The three children, who have since been found guilty of animal abuse, were sentenced to community service at the GRPSCA.
Olivia, the last of the three tortured Lawaaikamp dogs, went to her forever home on 29 June.
