GEORGE NEWS - The Garden Route SPCA (GRSPCA) has noted an alarming increase in the number of dogs bitten by snakes across George in the past few weeks.
These bites are mostly caused by puff adders and night adders.
"We are urging pet owners to keep a close eye on their gardens and what their pets are getting their noses into," read a post on the GRSPCA's Facebook this week.
"A puff adder bite is incredibly dangerous and if not treated urgently can lead to a very painful death. If you suspect your pet has been bitten, get them to a vet immediately."
Readers are asked not to try and catch or kill snakes, but to rather contact a qualified snake handler to remove the animal.
For the removal of snakes, readers can contact Justin Godwin on 076 974 4415 or Nick Kolberg on 083 262 5934.
The puff adder (Bitis arietans) have cytotoxic venom, which means it destroys bodily tissue in a process called necrosis.
