SCHOOL NEWS - York High School marked a significant milestone on Tuesday 2 June with the ceremonial turning of the first sod for its new multipurpose centre, a project that has been six years in the making.
The facility, which will accommodate up to 1 500 people, is set to transform the school's sporting, academic and cultural activities by providing a versatile indoor space capable of hosting the entire school community under one roof.
The nearly R20m project has been funded entirely through private contributions, with alumni, parents and a private trust joining forces to make the development a reality.
Principal Francois Moll described the occasion as the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the school's history.
The construction is expected to commence next week. Once completed, the centre will serve multiple functions. It will provide a venue large enough to accommodate the entire school for assemblies and special events, while also offering a dedicated space in which matric learners can write their final examinations.
The facility has been designed with sport in mind and will cater for a range of indoor activities, including hockey, netball and cricket. The plans also include the addition of a gymnasium at a later stage.
Principal Francois Moll turns the first sod, marking the start of a new phase in the school's structural development.
The development is expected to ease the pressure on the existing facilities while creating new opportunities for learners to participate in sport and school activities, regardless of the weather conditions.
The school's current hall will continue to play an important role. Rather than being replaced, it will be repurposed as a dedicated cultural centre for York High's renowned music and dance departments.
The marked area, affectionately known among the learners as "the postage stamp", is the site where the new multipurpose centre will be built.
