GEORGE NEWS - The George Herald has recently published numerous complaints about the seemingly worsening state of cleanliness in George with illegal dumping and littering being the order of the day.
Yet another complaint was submitted by André Kok, who says he drove along PW Botha Boulevard last week when he took visitors to Kloppers. "What a shocking situation. I could not believe or defend it."
Maria Junies from Short Street in Pacaltsdorp wrote a letter (see Letters page) about illegal dumping of household rubbish just across the road from her home. Used baby nappies picked up by dogs were carried to her house and on windy days her fence is spoiled by papers blowing everywhere.
She has had to put up with the situation for the past two years while her complaints to the municipality did not render any results, she writes.
George Municipality's communications department promised to refer these complaints to the relevant department to deal with. The newspaper was referred to a statement from them early in January that explained that the December holiday volumes of waste landing in waste bins, illegal dumping and littering are extremely high.
Cleaning takes place as soon as possible and things are expected to be back to normal now that schools have resumed, people are back at work and the visitors have left.
Complaints on refuse issues and sidewalk weeds can be laid at Environmental Services on 044 802 2900 or at 82 Meade Street.
