GEORGE NEWS - Two students of the South Cape College George Campus were removed from the premises while picketing at the college offices in Mitchell Street today, Friday 19 March. It was earlier reported that two students were allegedly arrested, but police have denied this.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Sgt Christopher Spies, the police intervened when the students allegedly tried to prevent the college staff from leaving the premises.
Spies said the two students were not arrested but taken aside to allow the staff to leave safely, after which the students were released.
Students have staged several protests over the past week because their NSFAS grants had not been paid. George Herald reported about the matter a number of times during this period.
Students told George Herald that they went to the college offices today to demand help and answers because their allowances have yet to be paid into their accounts.
Wam Achuma Ngqandu, spokesperson for the SRC, said about 50 students were evicted this past week because they could not pay their rent.
Enquiries have been sent to the college’s acting principal, Dr Terblanche. No response has yet been received.
Updates will follow when more information becomes available.
