GEORGE NEWS - A splash of colour is making a big difference at the George Night Shelter, where newly painted murals are doing far more than brightening walls - they create a sense of belonging for those who call the shelter home.

The project was initiated by Rotary George member Michael Addinall, who serves on the shelter's board. "It gives a sense of pride and fellowship," he said during a visit to the shelter last Thursday, 2 July.
Fourie Ackerman, an artist from Friemersheim, was commissioned to paint the murals. In all likelihood, they will be finished within the next two weeks. Arthur Ziebritz, who has been a resident at the shelter for the past decade, spoke highly of the colourful artwork that now greets them every day.

Addinall described the George Night Shelter as the best-run shelter in South Africa and praised the leadership of manager Rina Smit for the high standard of care and support provided to the residents.
The George Night Shelter accommodates about 150 people every night. For R25, residents receive a warm bed, dinner, breakfast and access to a hot shower. During the winter months, the demand for accommodation increases significantly.
Ziebritz also celebrated another significant milestone the shelter has achieved. During the past term, 10 residents were successfully reunited with their families. "That is a huge milestone for us," he said.

The shelter is now preparing for its next major project, a 300m² extension to the men's dormitory. Once it is finished, the expanded facility will require beds, lockers, linen and bedding.
