GEORGE NEWS - New voters in Ward 3 are asked to register this weekend, Friday and Saturday, 6 and 7 October, for the upcoming by-election following the resignation of the DA councillor, Rassie de Villiers. Residents in Ward 3 will be voting for a new ward councillor on Wednesday 21 November.
Ward 3 includes the following areas: Heatherlands, Glen Barrie, King George Park, northern half of Kingswood Golf Estate, and Heather Park (east of Airway Road and south of Witfontein Road).
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) will register new voters at the Outeniqua Bowling Club in Airway Road from 08:00 to 17:00.
In order to vote, residents need to reside in the ward and be registered with the IEC.
Residents must have their RSA ID books (or temporary IDs) with them and also confirm that they are resident in the ward. Proof of address is not required. It is important that residents of Ward 3 who have not yet registered as voters, do so.
In addition, IEC Western Cape electoral officer Courtney Sampson appeals to voters to make sure their addresses have been correctly registered on the database.
Voters who confirmed their addresses at the address harvesting weekend in March this year, do not need to register again. Voters can check their registration status by sending an SMS with their ID number to 32810.
According to the DA constituency head of George, Andricus van der Westhuizen, the voters in Ward 3 demonstrated a considerable level of involvement and interest in the affairs of the local government in the past by turning out in large numbers.
"Of those registered in this Ward, 77% voted in 2016, while the average turnout of voters in George was only 60%. The DA candidate, Cllr Rassie de Villiers, who resigned recently, received 92% of the support in 2016."
