GEORGE NEWS - A Piper Seminole PA-44-180 multi-engine training aircraft made a belly landing on Runway 29 at George Airport on Tuesday 19 March.
The incident happened at 13:58. According to the international flight training academy, Aifa, it happened during a training session.
There were two people on board, an instructor and a student, but nobody was injured. Both were South Africans.
The landing gear had malfunctioned and the reason for the "wheels-up" is still under investigation.
The airport fire and rescue unit imme-diately responded to the incident and the aircraft was removed from the runway.
It took less than one hour to clear the runway and normal operations resumed at 15:00.
The aircraft was lifted by means of airbags after which the landing gear was manually extended and the aircraft was towed back to the general aviation area.
