GEORGE NEWS - Two Grade 12 learners from Imizamo Yethu Secondary School have won university bursaries after entering the Nedbank Economics Essay Competition last year. Akum Ziqwayi and Othandwayo Mbanga both won bursaries against stiff competition.
The competition involved writing a 2 200 word essay on an economics topic chosen by Nedbank, followed by giving an oral Power Point presentation in Cape Town. The prize-giving event was held on Friday 2 June.
Both Akum and Othandwayo are beaming with joy for being chosen from among the 14 hand-picked learners who received a bursary for four years at a university of their choice. They were also awarded a cash prize of R3 000, along with 24 learners who made it to the final round.
"In total, 68 learners in the Western Cape took part in the competition," said the Imizamo Yethu Economics Department head, Didi Madikane.
"I don't have any words, I am so happy. These children have so little and they made us so proud. They both follow subjects in commerce with mathematics. Our school principal, Phumla Cona is also very proud of them."
Asked about how the two learners feel about their success, Madikane said: "They cannot keep quiet, they are constantly talking about it. Yes, they are very, very happy."
