GEORGE NEWS - An article George Herald published in mid-January shared Mercia Roberts' story and her urgent need for an electrically powered wheelchair after her own had broken down.
The response that followed was overwhelming.
With the help of one very special woman who brought and donated a wheelchair, as well as with some funds raised from the community, Roberts' family could help her in a time when she felt vulnerable, isolated and unsure of what the future held.
"We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who opened their hearts to help Mercia receive a new electrical wheelchair," says Zelna Fourie, her sister.
Roberts has lived with paralysis since childhood and, due to severe deformities to her hands, relies entirely on an electrical wheelchair for mobility and independence.
When her chair stopped working, she was left almost completely immobile. This was a devastating setback during an already incredibly difficult period marked by the recent loss of her husband and the diagnosis of breast and liver cancer.
