GEORGE NEWS - An interim principal has been appointed for Thembalethu High School after the principal, Norman Cona, took on the job of caretaker principal at the new high school in Thembalethu, Jonga Street Secondary School. Mbuyiseni Edward Mgxaka, who has over 30 years of experience in teaching, started his career at Imizamo Yethu Secondary School after graduating from the Cape Teachers College.
He describes his upbringing as difficult, with many obstacles such as poverty and constant involvement in political activities as they tried to bring an end to apartheid. Magxaka was also involved in the establishment of the Thembalethu High School in 2003. Before taking this post of interim principal, Magxaka was the deputy principal of the school.
"At first I wanted to be a medical doctor, however the government of that time didn't allow black people to study mathematics, which was a requirement for studying medicine. Many students had to resort to other professions such as teaching. However, since I started teaching I fell in love with this profession and I believe it was a calling.
"I love working with children and helping them. I wouldn't trade this profession for anything," said Magxaka.
His vision for the school is for the learners to achieve great results and he wants to exercise discipline and proper management at the school. Magxaka will be acting principal until the position is advertised by the department and the governing body is ready to appoint a new principal.
