GEORGE NEWS AND VIDEO - Participants in this year's Outeniqua Wheelchair Challenge (OCC) have started with registration at Halfway Toyota in Knysna Road where the main event will take place tomorrow, Sunday 18 February.
Athletes from different parts of the country, and some African countries, will be officially welcomed this evening and entertained by various artists.
According to the organisers, the race promises to be an exciting one as new routes will be introduced.
This prestigious and only exclusive event in South Africa for persons with physical disabilities is organised by a dedicated team of professionals and volunteers. It has become a pioneering event in South Africa for previously disadvantaged and disabled young athletes, as well as all disabled persons, who embrace the opportunity to take part in a major sporting event that recognises them as athletes, no matter what their level of participation.
The OCC is not only a race for top world class wheelchair racers, but more importantly, gives the ordinary person in a wheelchair the opportunity to rediscover long-forgotten abilities and achieve something very special for him or herself.
This year’s Outeniqua Wheelchair Challenge – the sixteenth race since its inception in 2002 – takes place at the Race Village, next to Halfway Toyota in Courtenay Street, close to the Garden Route Mall.
The race will start Sunday morning at 07:00 with the 10 km followed by the 21.1km and 42.2km at 08:00. The fun ride starts at 11:00.
