GEORGE NEWS - An Isuzu double-cab bakkie belonging to Mark Jonkers, a former taxi owner and director of George Link, the company that operates the GO GEORGE buses, was set alight at his house in Canary Street, Rosemoor last Wednesday, 15 November.
Jonkers's daughter, whose bedroom is next to the lean-to garage where the vehicles are parked, saw flames through the window just before midnight.
"My daughter woke us up and I came running out with buckets of water and doused the flames. Luckily we acted quickly and saved the bakkie from exploding," said Jonkers.
Jonkers told the George Herald that he is convinced his vehicle was petrol bombed, as he found a piece of paper soaked in petrol that he suspected had been jammed into the neck of the container.
"This is the fuse for the petrol bomb. I have my suspicions who could be responsible," said Jonkers.
The police detectives from Conville were at the scene early in the morning and Jonkers has opened a case at the police station.
Conville police confirmed that Jonkers had opened a case of malicious damage to property on Thursday 16 November.
Captain Ursula Lottering said the incident happened around 23:45.
"Apparently the complainant was awakened by his daughter and they found his vehicle on fire.
"A fire was started at the side of the bakkie where the petrol cap is. The fire only damaged the vehicle. Estimated damage is R70 000.
"The suspect is unknown. At this stage there is no additional information.
"The case is being investigated."
