GEORGE NEWS - Firefighters at the George fire station in Mitchell Street stood in awe as they inspected their revamped living quarters. Oakhurst Insurance managing director Peter Grindlay and a group of local businessmen had dug deep into their pockets and refurbished the entire building.
"Everybody is talking about how you played an integral part in fighting the devastating Knysna fires. This gesture is our way of saying thank you; to show how much the George community appreciates this amazing team," Grindlay told the firefighters on duty. He said the insurance industry has a long association with firefighting. The earliest known firefighting service was formed in ancient Rome where slaves fought the fires using buckets. The streets were patrolled and those that violated the fire-prevention code were severely dealt with.
Female firefighter Ilse Munro was impressed with the new set-up, saying that there is even a dressing table with a mirror.
Solly Gysman added that this is a dream come true. "Sometimes we spend hours hanging around. The new kitchen is well kitted out and the fact that there is a small entertainment area is really appreciated."
Fire Chief Neels Barnard thanked the Oakhurst team and contributing businesses for their selfless donations and effort. "When it comes to firefighting, priority spending tends to go toward firefighting equipment and related facilities, and our firefighters' resting quarters were mediocre at best. Yet, firefighting takes a major toll, and rest and recreational facilities are very important to rejuvenate the body and boost morale. We are so very grateful to the businesses who have reached out to reward the men and women who protect the people of George selflessly and with sincere commitment," he said.
Grindlay thanked his fellow donors from The Cooling Company, Coastal Electric, Curtain and Blind Studio, Max's Carpet and Upholstery Cleaners, Frank's Flooring and MMA Office Furniture for making it all possible.
