GEORGE NEWS - The Garden Route Botanical Garden will officially launch the wheelchair-accessible path in the Mushroom Meander on Friday, 14 October 2022 at 15:00.
The path was built on Saturdays by Mr Ken Gie, ably assisted by Mr Fred Hennop, and gardeners of the Botanical garden.
The Rowland and Leta Hill Trust gave R200 000 towards the project, Gribbon Trading donated the pickaxe handles for the railings and RAW Transport contributed greatly to the transporting of the materials.
Please join the Management and Trustees of the Garden for this momentous occasion and take the opportunity to explore the new and improved path through this pristine nature reserve area.
Tourism Manager, Joan Shaw says “George is proud to be an inclusive city with many enhancements that cater for persons living with disabilities. The theme for Tourism Month this year was accessibility and inclusivity, thus the meander in the Botanical Garden is another example of how the city is striving to be accessible to all its residents and visitors.”
Entrance fee to the Garden is R20.00 per person but anyone in a wheelchair will gain free access on this day. People in wheelchairs must be accompanied by an able-bodied person. Entrance is through the Aloe gate at the railway line.
The Garden management are excited to see the response from not only persons in wheelchairs, but from the general public, and would appreciate feedback on the visit.
Kindy note that due to the ecological sensitivity of the area, no dogs are allowed in the Mushroom Meander area.
