GEORGE NEWS - George Municipality has launched the "World of Tomorrow Festival 2019" to help increase public awareness of the importance of energy efficiency.
The initiative takes the message through children to the homes of George residents via an industrial theatre competition.
Participating schools present a 15-minute drama production exploring the topic "How do you mitigate climate change with energy efficiency".
The dramas will highlight the changes individual residences and schools can make to become more energy efficient, which in most cases will help curb the effect of climate change. Chantel Edwards-Klose, communications manager at George Municipality, says they will highlight their concern about the wasting of electricity, and the poisonous gases which are affecting climate change. "Their 15-minute play in Afrikaans will see them go on a protest march to raise awareness, and they will hand out spekboom for planting and flyers about energy efficiency to their communities during the march."
Heidedal Primary will take to the stage of the George Arts Theatre on 31 July, competing against fellow drama groups from the Blanco, St Mary's, Hibernia and Kretzenhoop primary schools. "An independent judging panel has been put in place constituting energy experts and drama experts, and floating trophies as well as prizes will be awarded to the schools and outstanding students, with each participant receiving a Certificate of Attendance. The intention is that this grows into an annual event," says Edwards-Klose.
The participating high schools are George High, McKinley Reid School, Rundle College and Thembalethu High.

The primary school drama production is on Wednesday 31 July and the high schools' turn is on Thursday 1 August. Tickets are R30 for adults and R20 for learners.
