GEORGE NEWS - Two hijacking cases are under investigation by the Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit (VCIU) in George following incidents involving e-hailing service drivers in April.
Both incidents, during which drivers were threatened with firearms, occurred in the early hours of the morning.
In the first incident it is alleged that on 3 April between 03:00 and 04:00, the driver (22) was supposed to pick up a client at Tabata Street, Zone 5 in Thembalethu when two men entered his vehicle.
One of the suspects threatened the driver with a firearm and forced him into the back seat. They later stopped and pushed him out of the vehicle. The suspects drove off with the victim's vehicle.
The second incident occurred at about 01:20 on 21 April on 13th Street, Zone 7 in Thembalethu. It is alleged that on arrival at the destination of three clients, one of the men remained behind and demanded cash.
He forced the driver into the back seat and drove off with the victim. The suspect dropped the vehicle at a garage on the N2 highway and fled the scene.
In both incidents the vehicles, a Volkswagen Polo and a Kia, were later found abandoned.
Southern Cape police spokesperson Sgt Chris Spies said in light of these incidents the Garden Route police management urged drivers to exercise extra caution and to take precautionary measures when operating during early morning hours. "Bolt drivers or those operating similar businesses are also advised to install security measures to deter such incidents and to report any suspicious activities immediately to police."
Anyone who has information that could assist in tracking down the perpetrators can contact the investigation officer, Sgt Niel Krisjan, on 044 803 4794 or 082 446 5497.
