GEORGE NEWS - The little ones at Nikiwe Educare Centre in Thembalethu recently got an pleasant surprise when Danny Cat turned up at their door.
The road safety mascot visits learners between Grade R and Grade 3 to make them aware of road safety in a playful and exciting way.
Danny Cat is one of the tools used by the Western Cape department of transport and public works to grow up a nation of safe road users.
The department's road safety management unit is currently conducting a youth and road safety awareness campaign at crèches and primary schools throughout the province.
The campaign educates schoolgoing children and youth about road safety through a number of innovative projects and programmes.
This includes education techniques that encourage children to actively participate, an annual high school debate competition, scholar patrol training and Danny Cat road safety education.
According to Lulamile Lakata, assistant director at the department of transport, the programme seeks to install the discipline of road safety among children from a very young age.
"We want to discuss roads safety issues with young people and ensure they understand why it is important for them to be safe on the roads. We also want to shift their attitudes and behaviour towards road safety," said Lakata.
