GEORGE NEWS - Thembalethu's online radio station, Lolim Radio, in partnership with George Municipality, kicked off a cleaning operation in the area on Friday 17 August.
The week-long operation, which ends on 23 August, seeks to encourage the culture of keeping a clean neighbourhood and discouraging residents from littering. Lolim Radio Marketing Director, Siyamthanda Theo Johns, said the operation will run on a regular basis.
"We hope to inspire young and old to make it their personal duty to keep their neighbourhood clean.
"We want to teach residents that environmental pollution impairs the environment and puts lives at risk, and there is a serious litter problem in Thembalethu. It is not pretty to the eye and we want a beautiful neighbourhood. We want to get Thembalethans to take responsibility for their own surroundings."
The operation started at the Fourways intersection where young and old gathered to help. George Deputy Mayor Charlotte Clarke joined in the effort and helped to sweep streets.
Clarke said, "This is what we want to see - locals helping the municipality to keep our environment clean. With cooperation from the community we can achieve great things."
George Municipality assisted with brooms, spades, refuse bags and other tools.
