GEORGE NEWS - Following the surge of femicide reports during August, which was Women's Month, George resident Camille Haupt of the Total Shutdown initiative, called on Georgians to join her in a silent vigil to mourn the deaths of women and children in South Africa.
Approximately 50 women, dressed in black, gathered in front of the George Post Office yesterday afternoon, Wednesday 4 September, in support of this initiative.
"In spite of the women's rights movement constantly begging government to take them seriously and to declare a state of emergency, women's bodies keep piling up," said Haupt.
Another group gathered at the corner of York and Langenhoven streets in a peaceful protest.
York High School learners also had a moment of silence during break-time on Tuesday for women and children who were murdered.
Locals in York Street yesterday peacefully protesting against sexual and gender-based violence.
