Update
GEORGE NEWS - The case of the 21-year-old woman who was arrested for attempted murder and child neglect was postponed to 28 October in the George Magistrate's Court on Monday.
The woman appeared in court after she allegedly dumped her three-day-old infant in a pit toilet on 17 September at Mandela Village in Thembalethu.
The baby boy was discovered by a member of the community who was passing by and heard the baby crying. The man found the baby naked with a clinic card next to him. The witness called the Thembalethu police, who responded swiftly. Paramedics were also called to the scene.
By the time the discovery was made, the baby was already suffering from trauma and hypothermia. He was immediately transported to hospital where he was admitted for emergency medical treatment. The baby has since been released from hospital and is under special care.
The court heard that a child born to the accused in the Eastern Cape in 2017, died after three days, allegedly as a result of fever and diarrhoea.
The case was postponed due to the absence of the investigation officer, who was on leave.
