GEORGE NEWS - The Childhood Cancer Foundation (Choc) in Cape Town has benefited greatly from a donation of paintings by the renowned George artist Michelle Benjamin.
Four Madiba paintings were sold for R170 000, money that Choc desperately needed for their programmes to help children with various cancers.
Choc was founded by a group of parents whose children had cancer and the organisation has been providing treatment and aftercare for children and teenagers with various cancers for 40 years.
Choc's fundraising coordinator Gadija Israel said they were ecstatic at receiving the paintings and imme-diately planned to auction them. "The paintings came as a much-needed blessing at the right time," she said.
Benjamin is internationally renowned and her paintings have been auctioned in London, New York, Dallas, Houston, Durban, Pretoria and George. Money raised from her art auctions have assisted many charities ranging from saving the rhinos to providing funds for school lunches, clothes, stationery and tablets.
She also contributed funds in the aftermath of natural disasters such as the Knysna wildfires in 2017 and Hurricane Sandy in New York in 2012.
Benjamin said she partnered with Choc because she wants to help children who have cancer. Because her three-year-old nephew had leukaemia, she has first-hand knowledge of the trauma of cancer in children.
In a previous partnership with the Reach for a Dream Foundation, her artwork Eesha's Journey, which depicted the illness and miraculous recovery of a little cancer patient, fetched a consi-derable amount of money that helped terminally ill children.
