GEORGE NEWS - This Women's Day, we celebrate Laurie Edwall - the heart behind Options Care Centre in George, whose compassion has changed the lives of countless young women and families.
Laurie's journey began in 1994 when a pregnant young woman was referred to her. With degrees in teaching and anthropology, but no experience in the field, she simply listened.
Months later, she saw the woman's photo in the paper - her baby was already a month old.
"Having someone to talk to helped her," Laurie says.
That encounter made her realise just how vital it is to have someone by your side in a time of crisis. Unintentionally, that's where the idea for Options was born. "A listening ear can be the first lifeline," she says.
In 1996, Laurie joined a group that trained at Options in Cape Town, and in 1997, founded the George branch.
What began in a tiny outside room on York Street eventually grew into a fully fledged support centre in Albert Street.
Options now sees around 70 clients a month, offering HIV and pregnancy testing, support for HIV positive youth, counselling, antenatal classes, youth groups and support for teen mums and young adult mums and dads. Its practical initiatives include a Learn-to-Earn programme, jewellery-making (Amacici) and card workshops, along with tutoring, CV help and small business coaching.
"Some of our staff started as clients," says Laurie. "We try to find each person's gifts and passions."
Laurie's team includes 14 permanent staff (only one is male), seven contracted staff and about 20 volunteers.
Originally from Minnesota, Laurie met her husband, Dean, in the US. After marrying in 1981, they moved to South Africa and eventually settled in George to pioneer Youth for Christ ministries, including Options.
"We love what we do, but it's not always easy," she says. "Thankfully, we have an incredible team and community. We couldn't do it without doing it together."
