GEORGE NEWS - The George Airport did their bit for Arbour Month today, 26 September, planting two spekboom on the airport grounds. Brenda Vorster, the airport manager, was there to give a helping hand.
She said they chose this tree “because it is South African. It can also grow up to five meters and lives more than 200 years.”
Vorster says spekboom does not need a lot of water and is ideal for our climate. “You can also eat it and it has other healing qualities too.” The airport also intends planting protea trees as part of the Arbour Month celebrations.
To make sure that nobody forgets the importance of trees, each of the 75 or so staff members received their own spekboom plant to take home.
Each staff member received a young spekboom to take home.
