The driver of the truck, Chris de Koker from Mellin Housing in Cape Town, suffered only slight bruises and scratches. His passenger, Kenny Pistano, was treated in the Medi-Clinic for minor injuries and discharged.
They were on their way from Cape Town to George when the accident happened. De Koker said the truck had started veering off the road and when he tried to steer it back onto the road surface, it overturned. It came to a halt on its wheels, facing in the direction they were coming from. Wooden doors, window frames and steel frames lay strewn across the highway, blocking the road.
While the road was being cleared, traffic had to be diverted in single file over the grass ridge of the highway and a long line of vehicles piled up.
The building materials were transported to Builders Trade Depot for temporary storage.
This company also supplies some of the materials for the two housing projects. Paul Visser of Builders Trade Depot said da-mage to the load was estimated at about R10 000.
Officers from the local and provincial traffic departments attended to the accident scene.
De Koker and Pistano caught a flight back home that same night.
