GEORGE NEWS AND VIDEO - The Orchid Society of the Southern Cape today celebrates its 40th year of existence with various exhibitions showcasing this unique flower.
The show started on Thursday 12 September in the Presbyterian Church Hall in Caledon Street and will end on Saturday 14 September.
Please visit the Orchid Society of the Southern Cape Facebook page for more information.
Chairman of the society, Scott Ormerod, says that orchids' popularity is due to it being one of the biggest flowering genres.
They come in a wide variety of sizes and types and can require vastly different growing conditions.
He says that the plant also takes much longer to flower compared to others. A rose plant might flower in a year but orchids can take up to 7 years and sometimes longer.
Ormerod explains there are more than 25,000 known orchid species and new ones are still being discovered.
When it comes to hybrid plants there are more than 1.5 million variations.
